Ned's Interests

Husband to Cherlynn and father of four children: H, W, B, J

Family Life: My favorite part of the day is arriving home from work. The kids are usually having dinner, and they all hide under the table and wait for me to come into the house from the garage. I then pretend that everyone is gone and say things like: “Where did everybody go? I wonder if they went shopping?, etc.” After about 30 seconds, the children jump out from under the table or behind their chairs one by one and say: “Surprise!” Then I give each one of them a hug and we talk about their day. It is the Best!

We also have an established routine in the morning when I leave for work. When the kids hear the garage door opening, all (who are awake) come running. I sit in the car and roll down the window. Each child says good-bye and I give them a kiss. Harrison is usually first in line. After the kiss, they get a Tic Tac, and I like to surprise them by getting different colors and flavors. Favorite flavor is Orange; spearmint is not very popular. If I haven’t picked up the morning paper then they take turns running out to the drive way to get the paper. Then they all line up on the rug by the door (for safety) to wave good-bye. It’s a truly grand send-off.

At night, before the kids go to bed, we like to play games. All the usual favorites: Old Maid, Go Fish, Matching Game. For Christmas, I bought an old-fashioned Bingo game with cards and cage to turn the numbers. After a few days, we began using mini-marshmallows to mark the numbers on our cards, and at the end of the game, we eat the marshmallows! Tasty and fun. I’ve also introduced my kids to board games with Sorry! This is a great game for kids because it involves counting and strategy, and even our 3 year old can play.

My other favorite part of the day is “(Herbal) Tea Time” with Cherlynn. At the end of a long day after the kids are finally in bed, we sit together for a few moments and talk about the day over herbal tea (usually mint or chamomile). It is the most relaxing and enjoyable time of the day.

I recently started a new daily exercise routine taught by the Henderson Police Department. I get up at 5:00 a.m. M-F and drive down to the Henderson Downtown Recreation Center for the 6:00 a.m. start time. It has been the best! We do strength and core training as well as yoga. So far, I have lost 5 lbs. – only 20 more to go.
